Behind the Hedges

Summer sights in Watch Hill include umbrellas lining the beach along Napatree Point on long sunny days occasionally broken by the cool breeze of an afternoon storm. Rolling green lawns, hedges, and classic shingle houses provide the backdrop for time-honored summer traditions. Men play golf in annual club tournaments. Kids play at playing golf or tennis, when not enjoying the wide white beaches and ocean waves. Aged college athletes and swimming enthusiasts try their luck in an endurance ocean swim. Adults and children alike meet at the beach on Thursday nights, grilling steaks and playing games at the water edge as the sun sets into Narraganset Bay.

In his series ‘Behind the Hedges’, photographer Will Vogt captures the residents and activities of Watch Hill, Rhode Island, where he has been a lifelong summer resident.
